How To Get Started With Instagram Ads

Ok, let’s keep it simple.

Before you run to the Power Editor and slap up your campaign, there are a few things you need to have in check.

A. Your Landing Page

Obviously, Instagram is a purely mobile platform. So whereas with a desktop campaign you can still “kinda” get away with that site that you built in ’96, there is no such thing on Instagram.

Your landing page MUST be mobile optimized for you to take advantage of Instagram traffic. Optimizing for mobile (all the way to your checkout page) is something you should do in any case as mobile traffic is constantly growing, while desktop traffic is decreasing.

Yes, let that sink in for a moment. Mobile traffic is constantly growing, while desktop traffic is decreasing. Don’t wait with optimizing your site until it’s too late.

Whether you use Leadpages, a WordPress theme or have your own web developer, make sure that your site looks good and is EASY to use on phones and tablets, so you don’t lose that precious traffic when they hit your landing page.

B. Your Targeting

Targeting schmargeting. No campaign can thrive without a solid targeting plan.

Because Instagram ads can be built inside the Power Editor, you pretty much have the exact same options as for a normal Facebook campaign.

This means you can for example target Interests, Website Visitors, and Lookalike Audiences.

Lookalike audiences are audiences that “look like” other audiences (no not physically, that would be freaky).

For example, you can build an audience that is similar to your email list or an audience that is similar to people who’ve viewed a certain percentage of your (wait for it:) VIDEO ad.

Start by making a custom audience of people who’ve viewed 50% or more of your video. Then, create a Lookalike Audience based on THAT list. Powerful stuff!

Yep, the possibilities, especially with video, are endless. But… let’s ask one important question first.

Even though Instagram has over 300 million active daily users, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right platform for you to advertise on.

You should always ask yourself, where is MY ideal customer hanging out? Or better yet, ask the Google.

Make sure you do some digging on the interwebs to find statistics on who Instagram’s most fanatic users are and if that does or doesn’t align with your target audience. Just type in “Instagram demographics” to get started.

Done with your research? Okay, moving on to the next step!

C. Your Ad

Now we’re getting to our favorite part!

On Instagram, there is an even bigger focus on the VISUAL part of your ad than on Facebook. Yes, you can add a description just like you can on Facebook, but it’s less noticeable. You’re going to have to do the legwork with your visual.

Now, why would you do this with a video and not just with an image?
Um well…I’ll let the stats do the talking.

  • Video ads increase purchase intent by 97%, according to Unruly.
  • 46% of users take some sort of action after viewing a video ad, according to Online publishers association.
  • 92% of mobile video consumers share videos with others, according to Invodo.
