An Introduction To Retargeting With Video Ads
Ever wish you could get more leads and sales without spending more time on your business?
Who doesn’t, right?
Well guess what… it’s easier than you think!
Today I want to talk to you about a super exciting opportunity you may not be taking full advantage of yet.
And that is: retargeting with video ads!
The screenshot above was taken from a video retargeting campaign we ran on Facebook and Instagram for one of our clients.
As you can see it resulted in 45 purchases for $3.30 each. Now you may think that 45 purchases is not a shockingly high number, right?
Indeed it’s not!
But wait… this specific client was selling high ticket programs costing on average $5-8K per customer.
So to reframe the question…would you like to pay $3.30 and get a $5K sale in return?
Um yep, so do we!
The great news is that for this campaign we didn’t mess with any complicated targeting settings. And, we also didn’t spend hours on creating a video.
We simply ran a video ad that we made in less than 10 minutes to people who had already visited our client’s website.
Yep, as easy as that!
Looking at the results we realized that retargeting, combined with the power of video, is pretty much a match made in heaven.
And…if you’re not doing it yet, keep reading… because you might be missing out on a ton of leads and sales unnecessarily!
Where Your Pixels At?
In the past weeks I’ve visited a few websites of products and services I was considering to buy. One was a page of an awesome retreat in Bali and the other one was an online course.
In both cases I was super excited about the content I found on these pages. Their websites looked well put together, the offers were awesome, there was tons of social proof on their pages and they also had a rock solid social media presence.
I could tell that both of these businesses were legit and that they were probably doing quite well, looking at the huge range of real (video) testimonials, the authority in their field and the quality of their offers.
There’s always a but right?
Why yes there is!
And a BIG one too.
Neither of these businesses had a retargeting pixel on their website!
No Facebook Pixel.
No AdWords remarketing tag.
Heck, not even Google Analytics in one case. Eek!
My first thought was… oh my, do they even know how many potential customers they are missing out on?
Because we all know what it’s like when we’re visiting a website and we’re in our “not completely convinced yet” or “just too busy right now” – state, right?
We’ll simply close the tab and move on with our lives!
In fact… did you know that for most websites, only 2% of web traffic converts on the first visit?
Will we come back to their site later on our own account?
In most cases… no! We get distracted, forget about it entirely or book a competitor’s trip to a another dreamy island instead.
UNLESS of course… this business would RETARGET us effectively.
UNLESS they would follow us around on Facebook, Instagram or Youtube or wherever else we hang out… and remind us again of why we should buy THEIR retreat or course!
Even better, if they would do this with a VIDEO.
On the Veeroll blog we’ve already talked about the power of retargeting quite a bit. So, if you’re reading this and are already running retargeting campaigns… hallelujah! We’re doing a happy dance for you!
But, as it turns out, tons of amazing businesses still aren’t taking advantage of this yet.
And… we get it. The world of Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest advertising (the list never ends…) is frankly…slightly overwhelming!
Once you find out what is possible with paid traffic you can easily find yourself in a hellhole of conflicting information about the best traffic sources, advanced targeting options and so called media buying “hacks” that literally seem to change every day.
But guess what… all of that complicated stuff is OPTIONAL.
Yes you can get amazing new traffic from all of these sources, if you know what you’re doing.
But, if you don’t yet have a dedicated person on your team running your paid traffic campaigns, you’ll likely break your brain trying to figure out this stuff on your own…while wasting a ton of money in the process!
Therefore our message to you today is simple…. you can get WAY more out of the traffic you already have.
If you run nothing else than retargeting campaigns… you’re already way ahead of most of your competition! And, if you do this with video…your chances of standing out have just multiplied tenfold.
Let’s dive in!
What Is Retargeting?
If you’re entirely new to retargeting, let’s take a step back for a moment.
Retargeting (also known as remarketing) simply means: getting back in front of people that have already been in touch with your business.
This can be done by running ads to:
- people who have visited your website.
- people who are on your customer email list.
- people who have watched one of your videos.
and so on…
The first one is the most common option and the easiest to get started with.
All it takes is to install a piece of tracking code on your site (a pixel), so that this code can start tracking your site visitors.
Why Should You Do It With Video?
We all know what it’s like to be stalked around the internet with images of products we were JUST looking at right? Most bigger brands have already implemented retargeting with images and text indeed.
But… NOT everyone is doing this with video yet.
Which is pretty crazy considering the fact that:
#1. Video ads increase purchase intent by 97%, according to Unruly.
#2. 46% of users take some sort of action after viewing a video ad, according to Online publishers association.
#3. Videos are shared 1200% times than links and text combined, according to Simply Measured.
If both you and your competitor are retargeting your customer with ads, who is going to grab the most attention? The one with the video of course!
And guess what… a campaign like this (incl. the making of the video) is one of the EASIEST campaigns to setup! Even if you’ve never setup a paid traffic campaign in your LIFE.
Let’s look at an example.
An Example Of A Simple Retargeting Funnel
As I mentioned earlier, the easiest way to get started with this is to retarget people who have visited your website.
For example, you can run a video ad to them reminding them to subscribe to your awesome email list!
To make this process more clear, we’ve decided to make you an epic drawing:
This is how it goes down:
#1. People visit your website / landing page.
#2. On your website you’ve placed your pixels for Facebook, AdWords and any other platform you’re advertising on.
#3. This allows you to create 2 lists inside the advertising platform:
List 1: People that have visited your landing page: the “raw” retargeting lists.
List 2: People that have visited your thank you page: which is the page they end up on after they have subscribed.
#4. Then, you run a video ad to your “processed” retargeting lists. Or in other words, you target List 1 minus List 2, with an awesome video message.
This is of course because you don’t want to run your ads to people who have already subscribed (waste of money and potentially annoying!).
And yes… this simple funnel is devilishly similar to the one we used for our client.
